I Done Good

When I was a child, music was everything. When I wasn’t listening to my albums, my nose was in a book. When my nose wasn’t in a book, I was sitting on the porch with the boom box listening to cassettes. Yes, I am that old. But my point is, music and books have always been my thing.
Fast forward twenty-five years and it’s like watching my childhood be relived by a taller, prettier version of my 13 year old self.
My daughter has always been into music. As she should be since I was a full time disc jockey while I was pregnant with her. I’d swear she tapped along to the beat of Garth, George, and Alan throughout the day. At two weeks old she attended a Bellamy Brothers Concert. At nine months, she saw Keith Urban for the first time. Age 8, her first Nickelback show.
But now she’s found her own music. Bands I’d never heard of. Songs I don’t know. And she’s just as passionate about them as I was about Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and most any other 80s hair band you could think of. She’s been lamenting missing the Warped Tour since last spring. (She was out of town when they passed through here.)
My first thought is “Who would take you to Warped Tour??” But then I remember my mom sitting through (read: sleeping through) Loverboy for me when I was 11 years old. My dad driving my sister, my friends, and I half way across Ohio to see Def Leppard. And sitting through countless other hard rock shows when he was a die-hard Country music fan.
My parents did that for me and now I will do the same for my daughter. I purchased two tickets for the All Time Low concert in November. I didn’t tell her, I just bought them, printed out the tickets, then showed her when I got home.
She screamed then started to cry. Best. Present. Ever.
Would you take your kids to a rock (or rap) show? Did anyone do something like this for you? Ever gotten a present that made you burst into tears?

You are a good mom, Terri! My kids are not in to concerts but my daughter and I did spend some time in car yesterday singing, singing, and re-singing “Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck’ just so she could learn the lyrics. 🙂

That is such a fun song! You should get a Best Mom plaque too. And just wait, sounds like your concert time is a-coming. 🙂

You’re definitely the cool mom. Even if you are a control freak. *LOL* And yes, karma comes around…that’s a cool mom and dad to go to concerts with you. My dad didn’t do that. (My brother went with me a couple times though. So it worked out.)

You are a good mom, Terri. I bet you have a great time too just watching I. have fun.

My parents did a great many things for me, but taking me to rock concerts was not one of them. It took them a while to accept that rock wasn’t destroying civilization. Fortunately, I had friends with cooler, younger parents who didn’t mind a group tagging along.

Looking back, I didn’t think of my parents as cool back then. But no one else’s parents were going to concerts so I guess they were way cooler than I gave them credit for.

Could be why 3 of their 4 kids have tattoos. 😉
